This ancient little chapel stands high on a splendid panoramic view-point and is the oldest church of the Sarganserland.
In the local vernacular known as "Saint Jöüri", it thrones on the north-westerly situated St. Georgsberg near Berschis, whose highest point is approx. 150 m above the valley basin. The chapel is probably all that remains of an early medieval fortified church complex. Archaeological finds indicate that the site was a Roman defence post in the classical period. From this fine view-point above the Sargans country one can envisage the former strategic importance of this steep rock. "Saint Jöüri" is the oldest church of the Sargans region and, as a great rarity, has two naves.
