The magnificent spectacle of the return from the alpine pastures occurs every year in September.
As the summer nears its end, magnificently decorated cows make their way from the alpine pastures down into the valley.
One of the loveliest sights is undoubtedly that of the cattle coming home down from the alps in autumn. Far away you can already hear the cowbells harmoniously ringing and young and old rush out onto the streets to see the fascinating, slow, dignified, bizarre procession of the cowherds in their embroidered pastoral shirts and hats decorated with flowers and ribbons and the cows with the 'Tschäppel'- the ornamented headgear and the 'Plümpen' (great bells) swinging.
