Customs and Tradition
All year long, the whole populace looks forward to the Carnival carrying-on from ‘dirty Thursday’ to Ash Wednesday. State of emergency in Flums! The Carnival in Sarganserland may be described as very traditional.
The ‘Butzi’ [carnival clowns] hide behind wooden masks and old rags and the uglier they look, the ‘prettier’ they are. Wooden masks and half-masks are typical for the region: rustic, original, expressive, impressive, frightening….
In the evenings, though, lovely figures from the distaff world appear on the picture screens. In various restaurants in the Flums area, Carnival parties are put on.
Then, around midnight, the secret of the strange ‘Butzi’ is revealed. And the Carnival Newspaper, d'Hächlä, is always eagerly anticipated, as everyone wants to read who will be attacked in its pages and why.
On Rose Monday, the annual Carnival parade takes place in Flums, and there are always various clowns from all over Switzerland.
Free pass for people in costume
From ‘Dirty Thursday’ to Carnival Monday, people in costume can ride the Flumersberg mountain railways free of charge.
Carnival on the Mountain
In Flumserberg, too, high spirits reign during the Carnival. Along with costume parties, various ‘Carnival Bands’ can be heard in the skiing runs, in the mountain huts and in bars.
Costume Contest
The Ski and Snowboard School Flumserberg holds a costume contest every ‘Dirty Thursday’. The funniest and most original costumes and disguises are put on show. Additional Information
