The symbol of Flumserberg
Seen from a distance, the Spitzmeilen resembles a small volcano. Up close, though, it turns out to be an imposing, rocky peak, evenly shaped.
Magnificent circular tour with a climb to the peak
Start by taking the cable car to the summit of the Maschgenkamm at 2,020 m above sea level. Then follow the high altitude path to Zigerfurgglen; on the
way, you can already see the peak of the pitzmeilen in the distance, dominating the horizon. From Zigerfurgglen the hike goes over alpine meadows and past fresh, mountain streams in the direction of Calans and onwards to the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) Spitzmeilen hut. Up to this point, because of the only slight changes in gradient, it is a real pleasure hike. From the Spitzmeilen hut, the path goes eastwards to the gently sloping shoulder of the Spitzmeilen, then head-on to the mountain and then on the southern side. Now we come to the
hard part, the climb to the peak. Using a chain and fixed cable installation, the short, steep, rocky climb at the end can be conquered safely. The climb is only suitable for sure-footed hikers with a head for heights. The ascent is undertaken at your own risk and responsibility.
Sublime view at 2,501m above sea level
Anyone who makes it to the top will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama encompassing the majestic Churfirsten, the Alvier chain and the Glarner and Bündner Alps. The peak itself is rather narrow and exposed.
Return via another peak
After climbing down carefully you soon come to another peak, the Wissmilen at 2,483 m above sea level. Follow the saddle and then take the path to the right back down into the valley to Alp Fursch. The hike continues on a wide footpath to Panuol and then, following a last ascent over the Maschgenlucke, you arrive back at the Maschgenkamm. Descend comfortably back to the valley by cable car and look back and review the tour you have just accomplished.
Time required for this hike
There and back from Maschgenkamm to Spitzmeilen takes about 6 hours.
